The China earthquake today took place at the Qinghai Province’s Yushu County.  This is located on a Tibetan Plateau.

The earthquake was originally reported as a 6.9, and it was also initially thought that there wasn’t any widespread damage.  However, the death toll has climbed to 400 and there is mass devastation of buildings and homes.

Similar to Haiti, this area of China isn’t as sophisticated as Shanghai and other city regions.  It is a rural area where the building codes don’t provide for earthquake protection.  It is for that reason there is widespread damage.

The China earthquake 2010 comes days after a quake in the Solomon Islands and not too long after a quake hit Mexico.  It’s the worst quake in terms of damage and death since the earthquake in Chile at the end of February.

Many are fearful of all the earthquakes.  However, many of the quakes are taking place in areas that typically experience seismic activity.

Humanitarian aid should be on the way to China as we speak. Our thoughts are with the people there and we hope that they receive the aid that they need to get through this tragedy.
