NIU Shooting 2010 Another Breaking Campus Crime

February 19th, 2010

NIU shooting 2010 another breaking campus crime.  The NIU shooting 2010 comes after the UAH shooting which happened last Friday.  The Northern Illinois University incident wasn’t believed to have been perpetrated by a terrorist or a crazed student or professor. Campus authorities believe that the incident was isolated and between two students.

There has been a rash outbreak of violence during the past few months.  Late last year an Army doctor with Muslim roots went rogue and perpetrated the Fort Hood massacre.  Shortly thereafter, a frustrated man opened fire in an Orlando office building.

Fast forward to early 2010.  Amy Bishop allegedly shot and killed three faculty members at the University of Alabama, Huntsville.  Just yesterday, Joseph Andrew Stack allegedly burned his house down and flew a plane in to an Austin, TX office building which housed an IRS office.

So why the violence?  Times are tough.  Bishop is believed to have been involved in a dispute over tenure.  Stack left a lengthy note behind which chronicled difficulties and frustrations dealing with the IRS over specific tax issues.  The Army doctor responsible for the Fort Hood shootings felt conflict between his Muslim roots and his American allegiance to the Army.

Will the NIU shooting be the last big crime of 2010? Don’t count on it.  When times are tough and people are desperate, anything can happen.

The NIU student believed to have been responsible for the shooting is in custody. Only one student was injured.
