2010 Moscow Subway Explosion and Female Suicide Bombers in Russia Devastate International Community. Yesterday morning during rush hour, two female suicide bombers struck forty-five minutes apart in subway stations in Russia’s capital of Moscow. This was the most devastating suicide bomber attack in the country since February 2004 attack where 39 people lost their lives inside a train.
The perpetrators wanted to kill as many people as possible, as they struck during the morning rush hour and also had metal casings around the bombs showcasing that they wanted the explosives to do as much damage as possible. Both attacks took place so that both people on the busy platform and inside the trains were injured or killed, as the bombers got into the trains as they pulled in to the station.
The death toll stood at 38, but officials warn that the total could increase as those previously injured could actually be getting worse.
Even though the transit system of Moscow is in disarray, most of the subway system is still running. Both of the explosions took place on line #1 – which is the country’s red line.
The women that allegedly performed the attack are believed to be Chechen based on body parts scattered around the bombing sites. Female suicide bombers calling themselves “Black Widows” have been commonplace in Russia, especially during the Chechen wars during the 1990s.
The US and France have both made statements condemning the bombings in Russia. The world stands behind those that become victims of violence.
