March 15th, 2010
Japan Earthquake 2010 and Damage, Death Toll. Japan recently experienced a 6.6 earthquake. Luckily, the damage is minimal and there are no deaths reported. The quake is only one of the most recent in a string of earthquakes that have rocked the world.
The string of big earthquakes started with Haiti. In January, the island of Haiti experienced a strong quake near the capital city of Port-au-Prince. Millions are displaced, and the death toll was astronomical. The poor socio-economic status and overall poverty of the country will make it that much harder to rebuild.
ON February 27th, an earthquake in Chile did an estimated $8 billion in insured damages alone and killed hundreds. Millions are displaced, and the country most recently had three strong quakes late last week during the Presidential inauguration.
The Japan earthquake in the country’s northern region but was felt in Tokyo, and light building swaying is all that was reported. The country’s state of the art earthquake alert system warned the country of the looming quake and allowed people to be prepared.
The quake did not cause a tsunami, but authorities monitored the situation very closely.
In addition to the Japan earthquake, Indonesia also experienced a quake. It registered at 6.4 on the Richter scale. More information about the earthquake in Indonesia can be found HERE.
