Japan Earthquake 2010 Another Big (6.6) Quake Affects Island

March 14th, 2010

Japan Earthquake 2010 Another Big (6.6) Quake Affects Island.  There is another earthquake that has rocked the Pacific area.  Japan experienced a 6.6 earthquake on March 14, 2010.  The event unfolds just weeks after Chile’s mega quake, and shows that the tectonic plate movement has continued.

Japan had a 7.0 earthquake off her coast on February 26, 2010 – just one day before the Chile quake.  That quake unfolded without event – because it happened underwater and did not cause a tsunami.  There were no casualties and no damage done.

Today’s 6.6 quake rattled buildings in Tokyo, but the reports of damage and casualties have yet to be released.  The Associated Press reports only light structural damage near the epicenter.

Japan has state-of-the-art earthquake alert system that warned the country just before the quake hit. In 1995, a 7.2 quake near Kobe killed 6,400 people.

There’s currently not an alert for Tsunami but authorities are monitoring the situation.

Japan isn’t the only country to be affected by earthquakes today.  Indonesia also was the recipient of an earthquake, registereing at 6.4 on the Richter Scale.

In addition to Japan, Indonesia, and Chile other recipients of recent quakes include Haiti, Turkey, Hawaii, Oklahoma, California, and other countries within the Latin American region.  Everyone is holding their breath hoping that the quakes don’t continue.
