Chile Earthquake 2010 and 3 Aftershocks or Quakes Shaking Latin America on March 11, 2010 UPDATE. The 8.8 quake in Chile is the tip of the iceberg. Today, three separate earthquakes or aftershocks rocked the Latin American country. They registered at 7.2, 6.9, and 6.0 on the Richter scale, although widespread casualties and damage have not been reported.
The new quakes surfaced when the new president was getting sworn in to office. They spawned a tsunami warning, although no tsunami is reported to have surfaced. The 8.8 earthquake which happened on February 27, 2010 caused a tsunami 6,700 miles away on the shores of the American Hawaiian Islands. Fortunately, the tsunami was not as big as expected and no damage or injuries were sustained as a result.
On the other hand, the mega quake rocked the earth off its axis and is said to have shortened our days. Scientists claim that the natural disasters won’t have effects on weather patterns, as those are determined by the earth’s tilt. The tilt isn’t believed to have been affected by the recent developments.
In addition to the Chilean quakes, earthquakes have been felt in Haiti, other Latin American countries, California, Oklahoma, Hawaii, and Turkey. However, none have been as strong as the February 27 quake that rocked Chile and caused damages up to $8 billion in insured losses.
Chaos is still present in Chile, as many are still waiting for aid. There are over a million displaced by the disaster, and it will be a long time before rebuilding is complete.
