Bell, CA Administrative Salaries Anger Community: A Revolution Underway?

July 27th, 2010

Public officials in Bell, California angered residents after it was revealed that Robert Rizzo, City Administrative Officer, made over $767,000 per year, and a police chief earned nearly half a million dollars per year.  The median annual income in Bell is around $29,000 annually, showcasing the looming disparity between the public officials’ pay and the pay of those that they are charged with serving.

City Council members were also receiving $96,000 – something that just didn’t make sense to many once it was disclosed.  They have agreed to a 90% reduction in pay, drawing $673 monthly for their services.

The Mayor and Vice Mayor will complete their terms without pay; still yet, a probe by the local DA is underway.

The Bell, CA administrative salaries almost caused rioting in the area.  People were outraged that at a time when many municipalities are struggling to get by, when workers are getting laid off and public benefits are being cut – these individuals were getting rich.

The scandal could set off a wave of administrative salary reviews throughout the nation, as families demand to know just what their officials are earning each and every year.
