Oil Spill Pensacola Florida and BP Gas Station Protesting
June 7th, 2010
Oil Spill Pensacola Florida and BP Gas Station Protesting. Those in Pensacola Florida are outraged about tar balls washing up on their sugar sand beaches. Many Floridians are taking to BP gas stations and protesting about the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Even though the outrage is understandable, there’s something that many just don’t understand – when they protest and vandalize BP Gas stations in the US, chances are they are doing very little to hurt BP.
BP gas stations in the US, for the most part, are independently owned. This means that regular Joes own the stations and simply purchase the gas from BP. So who is hurt by the protest? The independent store owner.
Florida became the fourth state affected by the BP oil spill, which transpired after the Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded. The other states affected are Louisiana, Alabama, and Mississippi. The hardest hit state so far is Louisiana, but there’s a risk that the oil spill will go all the way around the Florida peninsula if the oil gets into the Loop Current.
In the meantime beach goers will see people picking up tar balls as they wash in. So far the beaches aren’t closed, but the health department is monitoring the water quality and will close the beaches if necessary.
