Unemployment Extension – Americans Bet on Monday Vote for Benefits

June 4th, 2010

Unemployment Extension – Americans Bet on Monday Vote for Benefits.  HR 4213 was passed by the House last week, but the Senate failed to vote on the measure before breaking for the Memorial Day holiday.  That means that for the past week, millions of Americans have been in limbo.  As it is finally Friday, many are hoping that they will have one weekend of uncertainty, and then be welcomed with the passage of the unemployment bill shortly thereafter.

The job situation isn’t looking much better.  It was announced that 431,000 new jobs were created during the month of May.  The figures sound great, don’t they?  President Obama notes that it’s a great sign that the economy is rebounding. We must admit, it does sound phenomenal, until you realize that 411,000 of those jobs are temporary Census Jobs.

So that means that out of the 431,000 new jobs that were “created” only 20,000 of them will remain in the long term. In addition, the Census is winding down and many of the workers who received “jobs” in may only attended a three day training seminar, but then weren’t offered any more work after that.

The unemployment extension bill will allow the long term unemployed in tiers 1-4 to be able to continue receiving benefits, but does’t add a 5th tier – something which is also desired by many.
