Chile Earthquake Earths Axis and Earthquake Deathtoll Climbs

March 4th, 2010

Chile Earthquake Earths Axis and Earthquake Deathtoll Climbs.  The year 2010 has been one earthquake after another.  In Chile there was an 8.8 earthquake that rocked the small Latin American Country.  The effects of the earthquake are devastating.  The death toll has climbed to 799 and the effects of the quake have moved the earth off its axis approximately 3 inches.

Yes, that’s right.  Saturday’s earthquake not only caused a tsunami some 6,700 miles away in the American state of Hawaii, but also wreaked havoc overall.

Losses that insurers have to think about in the future could be as high as $8 billion by some estimates.  In addition, general chaos continues as people are scared to go into their homes. Aftershocks continue days after the first quake, including a minor quake that was felt in California.

Scientists reassure that the shift of the earth’s axis won’t affect our weather patterns.  In addition, our days are shortened by 1.26 megaseconds - something quite alarming in and of itself.

Our days are determined by the earth’s rotation.  The rotation has sped up.  One can’t help but wonder how multiple large quakes like the one felt in Chile are going to stack up.

Rebuilding after the earthquake won’t be easy.  The efforts will likely take many years, billions of dollars, and lots of resources.  The Chile earthquake also moved the earth off its axis by three inches, and that’s something that cannot be undone.  This is truly one of those cases where mother nature’s fury has affected mankind in a serious way.
