Apple Sues HTC: 20 Patent Infringement Claims

March 3rd, 2010

Apple Sues HTC: 20 Patent Infringement Claims.  HTC is the maker of the highly anticipated Google phone, and the maker of the popular iPhone, Apple, is suing them over 20 Patent Infringement claims. The claims center around the user interface, touch screen scrolling, accelerometer capabilities, architecture, and hardware.  Windows is also accused of stealing hardware detectors used on the iPhone.

Apple wants to block the sale of HTC handsets that run the Google Android OS, which include the popular Nexus One and Android.  There are also a long list of other phones that are currently manufactured by the company, and Apple claims that they have repeatedly tried to replicate the iPhone design.

Steven Jobs said in a statement saying “We can sit by and watch competitors steal our patented inventions, or we can do something about it. We’ve decided to do something about it. We think competition is healthy, but competitors should create their own original technology, not steal ours.”

Apple isn’t messing around.  They want to ban the sale of the handsets and also receive triple damages plus interest for phones already sold.

Everyone knows that Apple does well financially, so why have a triple damages? It actually can be a pretty smart move. They will show everyone that they aren’t messing around, as they have a lot of great technological innovations and if they step aside and let companies replicate, before you know it they won’t be much different than their competition.

On the other hand, some think that the Cupertino, CA company is overreacting.  What do you think?
