Arizona Immigration Law SB1070 2010 – ACLU and Civil Court Actions Abound. The Arizona immigration law SB1070 isn’t losing any ground any time soon. There are many individuals, human rights organizations, states and the federal government that aren’t too happy with Arizona’s decision to criminalize illegal aliens being in the US illegally.
So far, it’s been reported that there have been five challenges of the law, including a lawsuit filed on behalf of 14 organizations and 10 individuals. The ultimate goal is to keep the legislation from being enacted at the end of July as planned.
The court could consolidate all five lawsuits filed into one big lawsuit.
There has been much debate over the reasonableness of the law. Is it reasonable to make it a crime to be in the US illegally at the state level? Will the law as written encourage racial profiling as feared?
Miss Oklahoma, Morgan Elizabeth Woolard, stated that she believes in state rights, and is against illegal immigration. However, she’s also against racial profiling and therefore can see both sides of the argument. Her answer is said to have cost her the Miss USA Crown to Miss Michigan, an Arab-American who tripped over herself in her gown and didn’t know what birth control pills were.
The controversy won’t die down. There are some good points on both sides of the arguments, and this isn’t a topic that will just go away. This is something that needs to be addressed and rectified.
