2010 Car Bomber at Times Square Suspect Faisal Shahzad Arrested After Times Square Bombing Attempt. Saturday night’s attempted car bombing in New York City prompted a large manhunt for a suspect who left a suspicious vehicle in a crowded area in Times Square. An observant t-shirt vendor alerted authorities about a suspicious vehicle, and then an amateurish bomb was found inside said vehicle.
The Nissan Pathfinder that housed the potential deadly bomb was purchased off from Craigslist. Although the new owner stripped the VIN number from the window, it was still located on the axel rod. Police used that number to track the vehicle back to the original owner, who indicated to them who they sold the vehicle to.
30 year old Pakistan born, yet naturalized American Faisal Shahzad was arrested at the JFK airport trying to leave the country. He was located i the customs area and was arrested without incident. Despite previous claims that the bomb was not believed to be Al-Qaeda related, the suspect had just returned from a trip to an area known for its Al Qaeda recruits.
The bomb found in the Pathfinder was constructed of propane tanks, a timer, a gun locker, gasoline, and other products. Authorities say that it could have blown out windows of nearby buildings and also thrown shrapnel into the crowd. This had potential to be a very deadly attack.
Luckily no one was hurt and authorities were able to locate the suspect quickly. We will keep you updated.
