Arizona Immigration Law SB1070 2010 And Alien Anger & Outrage

Arizona Immigration Law SB1070 2010 And Alien Anger & Outrage. Many from the immigrant community are angered over the recently passed Arizona immigration law, aka SB 1070. The law requires immigrants to be able to prove their status to law enforcement if necessary. Some think that the law will enable racial profiling and will negatively impact the quality of life of the Latino community.
What suffices for adequate documentation? If an immigrant has a driver’s license or state issued ID card, that is proof enough that someone is in the US legally. One does not have to carry around their birth certificate or immigration paperwork to prove status.
Still yet, the outrage felt was so bad that protesters smeared swastikas using refried beans on the Phoenix capital building windows. The outrage has radiated well outside of Arizona – to California and Washington DC.
Many American citizens applaud the legislation, and hope that more states and the federal government follow suit. Immigrant communities are outraged. Latina singer Shakira fears that victims of domestic violence will be further victimized by a fear of calling law enforcement and having to prove the status of her and her children.
Approximately 60,000 immigrants peacefully protested Arizona’s law in Los Angeles, California in the nation’s largest May Day rally. Certain municipalities in California have instituted a boycott of Arizona and will not reimburse employee travel to the state.
Many point out that the law isn’t directed at Hispanics. The law covers ALL immigrants – including those from Europe, Canada, and other countries.
As the debate continues, we will keep you informed. Both sides are heated, and it will be interesting to see what comes of this law.
