Haitian Man Rescued After 11 Days in Rubble

January 25th, 2010

A Haitian man was rescued after 11 days in the rubble that came from the 7.0 earthquake that shattered the island nation on January 12, 2010.  As the rescue mission presses on, it becomes less and less likely to find survivors in the wreckage.

However, Wismond Exantus beat the odds and was rescued a week and a half after becoming trapped. Even more miraculous is that the survivor did not need any medical attention outside of being treated for dehydration and exhaustion.

The survivor was lucky because he was underneath a desk when the building he was in collapsed.  Had he been out in the open, he could have been killed or seriously injured.

He was also extremely lucky to find some soda and chips in his vicinity.  He searched for his cell phone, but found these items instead.  These likely saved his life.

The Haitian government recently said that search and rescue missions would be halted.  The chances of finding survivors has radically decreased. However, the latest rescue shows that there could be individuals still alive.

Haiti’s capital of Port-au-Prince has been devastated by the earthquake.  American and other world wide relief efforts are underway.  There are many avenues where those concerned about efforts can give.

Haiti will likely be re-building from the earthquake for many, many years.  The death toll is high and our thoughts are with all those with missing, dead, or injured loved ones.
