Walmart Cutting 11,200 Jobs
January 25th, 2010
As the economy worsens, the unthinkable is happening – Walmart is going to cut 11,200 jobs. As Sam’s Club is suffering because of increased competition from other warehouse stores such as Costco, and this means that 11,200 people are facing unemployment.
Among those losing their jobs are approximately 1,500 workers that will be laid off after 10 under performing stores are closed. Others include employees that hand out samples of products to customers as they shop.
The employees that demonstrated products will be able to apply for jobs with the company that Sam’s Club will use to outsource the work in the future.
It seems odd that one of the biggest companies in the US is having so much trouble, especially at a time when consumers are searching for the best bargains. It would be worthwhile for the company to try to find alternative ways to boost performances.
Perhaps cutting out the membership fee temporarily would help curb some of the hurt. Many people would love to shop at the retailer, but are hesitant to pay for the membership – even if it doesn’t cost that much.
Sam’s Club announced that they are cutting 1,200 membership recruiters showcasing that they may be putting their focus on households instead of small business. Many small businesses are struggling and cutting out unnecessary expenses while households are looking for ways to make more with less.
Buying in bulk may be a way of accomplishing just that for many families.
Still yet, the news isn’t getting any better for anyone. Unemployment is at the highest levels in a quarter century, and many Americans are running out of state and federal benefits.
